Nickel Plate Trail Bridge

Mike Kuepper, President of the Nickel Plate Trail, Inc. has announced that the contract has been let to repair the trestle bridge over the Wabash River beside the Kelly Avenue Bridge.  The winning contractor is R L McCoy from Columbia City.  This contract involves rehabilitation of the existing steel truss bridge, removing ties and providing a concrete deck for trail users.  A steel pedestrian railing will be provided on either side for safety.  As part of the contract an acid stained dark concrete will be provided to make the deck look like a railroad.  Approach slabs to the bridge will also be constructed as well as a wooden railing beside the approach.  Kuepper says the bridge has always been a key feature for the trail to enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river in safety.  He says he and other volunteers have worked long hours and held many meetings with the Indiana Department of Transportation to get to this point, and it is a very exciting time for everyone involved.
